Concept Maps
According to Novak and Ca￱as ( 2008 ), “concept maps are graphical tools for or-
ganizing and representing knowledge. They include concepts, usually enclosed in
circles or boxes of some type, and relationships between concepts indicated by a
connecting line linking two concepts. Words on the line, referred to as linking words
or linking phrases, specify the relationship between the two concepts.”
For illustration, we present a concept map that partially represents the MTCS
course and the connections between some of the topics it addresses (see Fig. 7.2 ). 3,4
3 Due to space limitations, only part of the topics addressed in the MTCS course are included in
the map.
4 Sometimes, different kinds of shapes and arrows are used to indicate different kinds of concepts
and different types of relations among them. For the sake of simplicity, we decided to use the
same shape (rectangle) for all concepts and the same kind of arrow for all types of relationships
between them.
