How to Incubate Chicken Eggs
If you decide to artificially incubate chicken eggs with an incubator make sure that the
temperature is a steady 99.5 F degrees before you place the eggs in the incubator. It takes
roughly 21 days for the eggs to hatch. Humidity also needs to be at 50% for the first eighteen
days which will then be increased to 80% in the last few days. Eggs also have to be turned
three times a day so use a pencil to mark the eggs so you know which to turn. Put an X on
one side and O on the other.
Make Sure the Incubator Temperature is Stable
It is very important that the temperature of the incubator remain stable. To ensure that the
incubator is correct it is best to calibrate it before use.
When Should I Increase the Humidity of the Incubator?
Most people who raise chickens think day 19 is the best day to increase the humidity in the
incubator to between 65% and 80%. Humidity can be increased by adding wet sponges to
the incubator. Some incubators will have a built in humidity regulator.
When Does a Hen Start Sitting on Her Eggs?
Only broody chickens will sit on their eggs for hatching. Most hens have had this trait bred
out of them. If they are going to sit on the eggs it will probably be after laying about a dozen
eggs.
How Long Does it Take a Hen to Lay Her Eggs?
Hens do not lay eggs until they are at least five months old. Young hens tend to lay one egg
approximately every three days. It really depends on the breed.
The Difference between Brown and White Eggs
Nutritionally there is no difference between brown and white eggs; chickens that have white
feathers and white ear lobes will lay white eggs while chickens that possess red feathers and
lobes lay brown eggs.

Chicken eggs generally take approximately 21-22 days to hatch.
