Chapter 6: Alternative Chicken Breeds
Some breeds of chicken are quite unusual and can either be kept as pets or for exhibition
purposes.
Blue Foot Chicken
Class & Type: This is an American class breed.
Origin: It originated in Canada.
Colors: It comes in white.
Sizes: It comes in standard sizes.
Characteristics: It has a single comb and is characterized by its blue legs. The bird is raised
carefully as a delicious meat bird and an exhibition chicken.
Breese Chicken
Class & Type: This is a French class of breed and is bred for meat.
Origin: It originated in France.
Colors: It comes in white.
Sizes: It comes in a standard size.
Characteristics: It has a single comb and blue legs. It is much prized as a delicious chicken
meat.
Houdan
Class & Type: French
Origin: It originated in France.
Colors: There are other colors but the black mottled variety is most common.
Sizes: It comes in standard size only.
Characteristics: This breed was originally bred for meat but is now used for exhibitions, as
it is really a light breed of chicken. It is a crested variety and because of this is best kept in-
doors or in a covered run. Its comb is termed butterfly and it has 5 toes. It requires the same
care as Polish breeds due to its crest.
