Cochins
Class & Type: This bred is classed as Asian and is a heavy breed used for meat and exhib-
ition purposes.
Origin: These birds originated in China.
Colors: The breed comes in a variety of colors, black, white and lavender.
Sizes: They come in bantam and standard.
Characteristics: These birds have feathered legs and feet and are a heavier breed. They
are dual purpose breeds and also used for exhibition purposes. They must be kept on
clean flooring that is maintained well so that their feathered legs and feet do not get
spoiled. They have small combs that are well-serrated. Their eggs are light brown in color.
Delaware
Class & Type: This is an American class breed, which is a cross between the Plymouth
Rock and New Hampshire Reds. It is a heavy breed and quite rare.
Origin: This breed originated in the state of Delaware.
Colors: It is white with black bars on the neck, wing tips and tail.
Sizes: It comes in standard and bantam sizes.
Characteristics: They are very good layers of large brown eggs. They are docile birds and
very winter hardy. These chickens will brood. They have single combs and clean legs.
Dominiques
Class & Type: This is an American class chicken and is a dual purpose bird. It is now con-
sidered quite rare.
Origin: It had its origins with the Pilgrim Fathers and was probably brought to America by
these settlers.
Colors: It is a barred variety of chicken.
Sizes: It comes in standard and bantam.
Characteristics: This breed has a rose comb and lays large brown eggs. It also has clean
legs. It is a docile bird and a good brooder.
