Translucent materials are surfaces that act as a hybrid between opaque and transparent materials. Light
passes through the surface, is scattered throughout the area underneath, and then either continues through
the surface or returns toward the viewer. The result is a material through which light passes but that is still
not transparent. This is similar to how a piece of white paper reflects all light but shows no reflection. Trans-
lucent surfaces are seen heavily in skin, wax, and even marble. Figure 3-3 shows translucent surfaces.
