Figure 11-10: A mixture of bump and displacement maps can reduce render time without a dramatic loss
of quality.
A common material used in exterior architecture (both in structural and aesthetic roles) is clay. Like
stucco, clay is a material that can be quickly created by using procedural textures. The basic material of
clay is similar to the base material that was created for stucco. The surface includes low Specular/Reflective
amounts (3%-5%), as well as slight Fresnel (5%-10%). Because reflections are broadly spread across the
surface of a clay object, the Roughness is also very high (about 80%). Unlike stucco, the tactile surface of
clay is typically smooth. The variation found across this type of surface is usually present in diffuse color,
reflectivity, and roughness. Subtle surface variations can easily be created with a single procedural texture
duplicated (or instanced) across multiple texture channels. A sample scene is included on the DVD as a start-
ing point for creating a clay material. Open the file Clay_Starter.lxo . It has a simple model and scene.
Adjust the Clay material by doing the following:
1. Start by adding a procedural texture to the material group (I am using Dirt for this example).
