In most cases, this type of contrast between interior and exterior materials is the norm. Aside from the
difference in tactile quality, exterior surfaces often display greater variance in color, reflectivity, and rough-
ness across the same surface. This is frequently seen in objects that are composites of many smaller objects,
such as tile roofs and stone walkways.
The main types of materials that need to be considered for exterior applications are wood, stone, metal,
and glass. The construction of these materials will play a smaller role in the completed image than texture
creation did in the interior example. Scenery will take a much more prominent role in a complete exterior
render, because the lack of appropriate surroundings can be a significant detriment to many aspects of a fin-
ished project. The effect will be seen in lighting, reflections, and the general tone of the scene.
Using Selection Sets
When creating the materials for the interior project, selection sets were a key element to quickly designing
materials with consistent attributes and minor variations (diffuse color, for example). For the exterior model,
