Creating Tile and Concrete
Both tile and concrete can be created quickly with photographic textures. For the sake of continuity, all of
the tiles in the house will be created using the same material. Several decent tile presets are included in the
content that is installed with modo, but these materials have a common problem: tile size. Most of the tiled
floors are made from a single tile that is repeated over and over, so the amount of variation between tiles is
absolutely zero. When placed in an area where the image will repeat more than three or four times, this will
not work well at all.
Instead of using the simple tiles all over the scene, another high-resolution image will be employed. In
this instance, I will use another one of the Arroway textures that is included on the DVD. Look at the dif-
fuse image shown in Figure 9-29 . You will see that even though the pattern is almost perfectly even, there is
definite variation in the individual tiles. There are also 12 tiles in each direction in the image map so, even
in a larger room, an image like this one can be placed and have to be tiled only two or three times—so the
repetition problem is solved without any further adjustment.

more natural-looking material.
