Texture Previews
Sometimes it is difficult to see what a texture will look like when placing it in a complex material (such
as the dirt texture in the previous example). There is a great way to preview a texture layer or an entire
material out of the context of your scene. In the Options menu at the upper left of the Preview Render
window (Render Open Preview Render), you can choose Plane, Teapot, or Sphere. These options show
the selected texture layer or material in the context of a simple piece of preset geometry. In the bottom
right is a scale indicator that gives the size of the object (the default is 1 m). By clicking and dragging
the magnifying glass in the upper right, you can scale the object to an appropriate size.
The use of the Clearcoat Amount setting can also be useful with reflective materials. Simply using 50%
Clearcoat Amount for the material with the blurred reflections produces a nice layered effect, as seen in Fig-
ure 6-37 . Textures can also be used with Clearcoat Amount. The same Dirt procedural that was used as a
bump map is used as the Clearcoat Amount in Figure 6-38 . Notice the subtle differences in reflection across
the surface of the model.
Figure 6-37: Clearcoat adds multilayered depth to reflective surfaces.
