rays penetrate the surface, bounce around, and then emerge instead of simply being absorbed, emitted,
or reflected.
8. In the Material Trans section, set the Subsurface Amount to 50% and the Scattering Distance to 10
mm. Note that the Scattering Distance helps define the scale of the object. Higher settings make the
object look smaller, because smaller objects would have deeper light penetration. The converse is true
of lower distance settings. The only problem that still appears here is the color of the scattering.
9. Create one more instance of the Diffuse Color image map and set it to Subsurface Color. With that
set, the colors on the surface are now reflected in the subsurface scattering. Your finished adjusted sur-
face will look like Figure 6-13 .
