In-Depth Information
First, you will need to set the Snapping mode. There are several choices here, but really only three cat-
egories (Grid Snap, Snapping To Pivots, and Geometry Snapping)—and only two of those are relevant to
the work that will be created in this topic: Grid Snap and Geometry Snapping. Grid Snap enables you to
constrain your object creation and modification to the grids. This is useful for architectural modeling but not
for the current case. Snapping To Pivots enables you to utilize the pivot point for the visible layer. This one
is more useful in setting up complex animation hierarchies. Geometry Snapping is what you will need in this
case because it enables you to snap the cloth to the model of the pedestal.
On the Snapping menu, you will recognize the lower three options as types of geometry. If you know that
you will need to snap specifically to a vertex, edge, or polygon, then you can select those elements directly.
However, for many functions, snapping to geometry as a whole is more desirable. After you choose Geo-
metry, you will be presented with additional menu options in the form of an entire section labeled Geometry
Snap. Within this new section, you will be able to identify the specific mode of geometry that you would like
to use for snapping. As previously mentioned, you can specify snapping the vertices, edges, or polygons. In
addition, you can choose to snap to the center of edges. Often, setting the mode to Auto (or Auto Center) is
preferable, as this will allow modo to snap to any geometry available. In addition, the Geometry Snap head-
ing enables you to choose the layer or layers that will be used by the snapping tool. The Background option
snaps to any unselected but visible mesh items. Active snaps to any visible and selected mesh items. And
the Both option snaps to any visible mesh items (selected or unselected). To simplify things in this case, set
the mode to Background and make sure that there is only one mesh item visible in the background.

The enclosed DVD contains a video demonstrating snapping modes and their uses in various situations.
