3. In the Action Center tab, choose Origin and rotate the light roughly 135° on the y-axis (green rotation
handle) and down about 90° on the x-axis (red handle).
At this point, your scene should look something like the image shown in Figure 4-19 .
Now you can create the rim light by duplicating one of the existing lights and rotating it behind the sub-
ject. I chose to rotate the light upward to fill in the shadows at the top of the head and over the shoulder of
the model. Figure 4-20 shows the addition of this light. Note the definition added to the top of the head and
shoulder.
With these three lights in place, you should have a fairly even lighting scheme. To add more interest,
you can adjust the color, intensity, and radius of these lights. Making these adjustments will provide a less
washed-out appearance and help to accentuate the details on the model.
Let's start by looking at color. Move to the Shader Tree tab and click the arrow by your first Spot Light
to reveal the light material for your key light. As we've previously discussed, light materials can be changed
and edited just as the materials on objects. Click on the color swatch for the light color, and the color pick-
er appears (see Figure 4-21 ) . The color values can be changed by using the color wheel as with any other
material, but one control that is of particular importance to light color is Kelvin, which controls the color
temperature. Selecting lower Kelvin values will result in warmer colors, while higher numbers will push the
color into the cooler color tones. Alternately, color temperature can be set by clicking the Set Temperature
(Kelvin) button. This option enables you to enter the color temperature numerically, but it will not give you
a real-time preview the way changing this value on the color picker does. Continue to adjust the color values
for the fill light and the rim light until you've come to a color balance that you like.
