Image-Based Environments
Just as images can be used to create textures on objects, images can be used as the environment for a scene.
By using high dynamic range images (or HDRIs) to surround the scene, lighting can be derived from the
environment. Modo ships with several preset environments. These presets can be accessed in the Preset tab
on the left side of the render interface. Simply click on the drop-down menu at the top of the preset viewer
and choose Environments. Environment presets are broken into three categories: indoor, outdoor, and stu-
dio. Each of these categories holds various ready-made HDR environments. Double-clicking on one of these
presets adds it to the scene. If global illumination is already enabled, the image will automatically light the
scene.
Figure 4-11
shows an example of a studio preset in use.
