Dome Light
Another variation of the Area Light is the Dome Light . As its name suggests, the Dome Light projects light
from a hemisphere surrounding the scene. Using the Scale tool can control the size of the hemisphere. With
the Dome Light, Simple Shading will typically produce unwanted results. Instead of enabling this option, it
would be beneficial to use a Directional Light with a high Spread Angle. The Dome Light projects light from
all around the scene to simulate global illumination, where the environment itself illuminates everything in
the scene. Often, the number of samples required to create an even lighting solution will result in a relatively
high render time, so in most cases using global illumination is preferable. The Dome Light does produce
soft, realistic lighting from a highly diffused source, as seen in Figure 4-7 .
