CSA cements were developed in 1970s mainly in China (Zhang et al.,
1999; Sui and Yao, 2003) and they are/were known as 'the third series cement
of China'. These commercial materials contain 50-80 wt% of C
4
A
3
S
and
30-10 wt% of C
2
S and are used mainly where rapid setting, early strength
or shrinkage compensation is required. However, structural applications were
also tested (Zhang et al., 1999 and references therein). The terminology for
yeelimite-containing cements is not uniform. Several acronyms have been
used for these cements and they are gathered in Table 18.2. In the last 15
years, the interest in CSA (and related) cements has increased due to the
potential environmental benefits of their productions. The uses of these
cements will be discussed in the next sections.
18.2 Types of calcium sulfoaluminate cements
Yeelimite-containing cements may have a very wide range of phase assemblages
that need to be clarified. These materials may be classified according to
the content of the main crystalline phase. Here, we propose to unify the
terminology used for these cements (see Table 18.2). In a later stage, the
