11.1.2 Use of recycled glass in concrete
There are two ways to use recycled waste glass in concrete, i.e. to use recycled
waste glass as aggregate and finely ground waste glass powder as pozzolan.
Waste glass can also be used as raw materials for cement production, and
finally to produce Portland cement concrete, but this practice is beyond the
scope of this chapter.
Research on the use of crushed glass as a partial replacement for aggregate
dates back many decades (Pike, recycled glass et al., 1960; Schmidt and
Saia, 1963; Phillips et al., 1972; Johnston, 1974). Because of the remarkable
strength regression and excessive expansion, the use of recycled glass in
concrete as part of the coarse aggregates is not satisfactory. Besides, the glass
particles are likely to break down during the mixing process (Alexander and
Mindess, 2005).
The use of crushed glass as aggregate for Portland cement concrete
does have some negative effects on properties of the concrete; however,
practical applicability can still be produced even using 100% crushed glass
as aggregates (Meyer and Baxter, 1997, 1998). The main concerns for the
use of crushed glasses as aggregate for Portland cement concrete are the
expansion and cracking caused by the glass aggregates.
Being amorphous and containing relatively large quantities of silicon
and calcium, glass is, in theory, pozzolanic or even cementitious in nature
when it is finely ground. Thus, it can be used as a cement replacement in
