In-Depth Information
Another direction of natural selection among red clover plants in conditions of
vertical zoning is the increased seed productivity, which secures effective substitution
of perished individuals. We have observed the maximal number of seeds in infl ores-
cence in sample Gornaya Saniba—44 percent (115.8% to standard) (Figure 2.6). A
large number of seeds in infl orescences was found also in another wild sample Dar-
gavski—43 percent (113.1% to standard).
Introduced cultivar SibNIIK-10 belongs to cultivars created in ecological-geo-
graphic and climatic conditions of Siberian region. Tested for economic and biological
traits in conditions of foothill zone of North Ossetia—Alania, it had low height and
low seed number in infl orescence, though according to data of cultivars' originators
from Siberian Scientifi c Research Institute for Fodder in its native region the cultivar
grew to a height of 83 cm.

Introduced from Belarus cultivars Yaskravy, Minskiy Mutant, and Ustodlivy had
nearly the same productivity, which did not exceed the level of standard. Plants of
cultivar Yaskravy had low height and seed number in infl orescences, while in cultivar
Ustodlivy the latter index did not exceed 13 percent. Apparently, introduced cultivars
SibNIIK-10, Yaskravy, Minskiy Mutant, and Ustodlivy for their economic and bio-
logical traits do not suit as initial samples for the creation of hayfi eld-pasture culti-
vars in conditions of North Ossetia—Alania, because they lack suffi cient adaptation
reserves allowing them to adjust to ecological-geographic and climatic conditions of
a particular locality.
Our studies showed that standard cultivar Daryal had maximal height. But this
cultivar was less productive than SL-38 and T-46 and had less number of seeds in
infl orescences than native populations.
