In-Depth Information
a system hypothesized to be sufficient to drive a morphogenetic event into 'dumb' cells
incapable of carrying out that event for themselves, to test whether they now do carry it
out. This strategy has the advantage that it tests systems in the context of real, messy biology.
Its disadvantages are that it is much slower and more expensive than computer modelling,
and the simplicity and isolation that is the point of most modelling is lost. The most fruitful
research programmes of the future will probably use both computer and synthetic biological
modelling in the following sequence:
analysis in vivo
modelling in computers
modelling by synthetic biology

/
This way of working combines the advantages of studying sub-systems in isolation on
a computer with verifying that they really work in the m ˆ l ´ e of a living cell.
