trunks of the blood system are therefore positioned by specific patterning signals before the
phase of local adaptive self-organization begins. The largest vessels serving each organ and
system also tend to be patterned by specific influences, before local self-organization takes
over.
The same seems to apply to the 'trunk' epithelial tubules in organs such as the lung and
kidney. The specifically 'early' patterning signals have not been identified yet, but it is clear
that the first divisions of the branching system are highly stereotypical. They become more
variable, and responsive to vagaries in the tissues around them, only later. 104
