Mitte: Tiergarten
A huge swathe of peaceful green parkland, smack in the middle of Berlin,
the Tiergarten stretches west from the Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag, its
beautifully landscaped meadows, gardens and woodlands a great antidote
to the bustle of the city. The park and its immediate surroundings form a
sub-district of the city's central Mitte district, whose eastern edge, long
occupied by the Berlin Wall, has flourished since the Wende . Huge building
projects have mushroomed here, some the result of the Federal government's
move to Berlin, but most simply reclaiming death-strip lands in prime
locations at the centre of a unified city. The result is a formidable showcase
of modern architecture around the fringes of the Tiergarten, arguably at its
most breathtaking when illuminated at night. Also here is the Kulturforum,
Berlin's second great collection of museums and cultural institutions.
