Mitte: Alexanderplatz and around
With the gigantic TV tower looming above all Berlin, the adjacent, dreary
Alexanderplatz - an unmistakable product of the old East Germany - is easy
to find. And as a major U-Bahn, S-Bahn and tram station it's also easy to get
to. During East Berlin's forty-year existence, while Unter den Linden was
allowed to represent the glories of past Berlin, Alexanderplatz and its
environs were meant to represent the glories of a modern socialist capital.
However, it's hard to imagine that the concrete gigantism of the GDR era will
wear as well as the efforts of Schinkel and his contemporaries. This is not to
say that Alexanderplatz should be passed by. It's worth exploring not only
the area's handful of historic buildings but also the East German creations
that have their own place in Berlin's architectural chronology.
