Amaze Indie Connect W amaze-indieconnect.de. Late April.
Gaming festival that brings together fans and creators of indie games for
three days of workshops, lectures, exhibitions and awards.
My Fest W myfest36.de. May 1. Open-air festival in Kreuzberg, with
music and cultural events and a lot of food stalls (especially around
Kottbusser Tor). Note that May Day demonstrations in the evening in the
same area have a tendency to turn ugly, though the daytime is safe and fun.
Gallery Weekend W www.gallery-weekend-berlin.de. Early May.
Forty galleries and small venues dedicated to art and design open for
one weekend to present exclusive exhibitions and contemporary
international art.
Theatertreffen Berlin W theatertreffen-berlin.de. Early May.
Large, mainly German-speaking theatre event held in various theatres,
which tends towards the experimental.
Carnival of Cultures W karneval-berlin.de. Mid-May. Colourful
weekend street festival held since 1996, with four music stages featuring acts
from around the world, plus food and handmade arts and crafts. The high
point is a street parade with around 4700 participants from eighty nations.
Jewish Culture Days W juedische-kulturtage.org. Mid-Aug.
Concerts, lectures, readings and films that focus each year on Jewish
culture in a particular country or place.
Lange Nacht der Museen W lange-nacht-der-museen.de. Late Aug.
More than one hundred of Berlin's museums stay open until at least midnight
and put on various special events in a repeat of the January event (see p.26).
SEPTEMBER
International Literature Festival W literaturfestival.com. Early
Sept. Berlin's biggest literary event celebrates “diversity in the age of
globalization” and features an eclectic and international selection of poets,
short story writers and novelists over nine days.
Berlin Music Week W berlin-music-week.de. Early Sept. Acclaimed
five-day pop music awards and festival event. With shows in clubs all around
town and big names playing the Berlin Festival ( W berlinfestival.de) at
Tempelhof; past headliners have included Moby, Björk and the Pet Shop Boys.
Feste an der Panke Mid-Sept. Pankow Volksfest that's often among
the city's best.
Berlin Marathon W bmw-berlin-marathon.com. Late Sept. With
around 40,000 participants from around 107 countries and the most
marathon world records (for men and women) set here, this is one of the
largest and most popular road races in the world. The route starts in the
Tiergarten, looping around to Friedrichshain and Dahlem before finishing
near the Brandenburg Gate. Closing date for entries is one month before
the marathon.
Berlin Art Week W berlinartweek.de. Late Sept. Big contemporary
art event. See p.218.
Berliner Liste W berliner-liste.org. Late Sept. Locally focused art
event held at around the same time as Berlin Art Week. See p.218.
JUNE
Fete de la Musique W lafetedelamusique.com. Late June. Bands
from all over Europe and beyond come to play in bars, clubs and other
venues around the city as part of an ambitious event across 520 cities
the world over.
Christopher Street Day W csd-berlin.de. Late June. Parade with
lots of floats, music and costumed dancers celebrating gay pride at the end
of the week-long Berlin Pride Festival. Draws around half a million people.
German-French Festival W volksfest-berlin.de. Mid-June to
mid-July. Mini-fair with food and music and a reconstruction of a
different French town each year.
Köpenicker Sommer Second half of June. Featuring a re-enactment
of the robbery of the Rathaus safe in 1906 (see p.146).
OCTOBER & NOVEMBER
Tag der Deutschen Einheit Oct 3. The “day of German unity” is
celebrated with gusto, beer, sausages and music at the Brandenburg Gate.
Festival of Lights W festival-of-lights.de. Mid-Oct. Every autumn,
Berlin's famous sights are transformed into a sea of colour and light, including
the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin TV Tower, Berliner Dom and more. The nightly
light show comes with art and cultural events around the topic of light.
JazzFest Berlin W jazzfest-berlin.de. Late Oct/early Nov.
Longstanding jazz festival staged throughout the city. See p.215.
International Short film Festival W interfilm.de. Mid-Nov.
Five-day festival, founded in 1982, that showcases numerous
competitions across all genres, as well as workshops, discussions
and parties.
JULY
Classic Open Air W classicopenair.de. Early July. The Gendarmenmarkt
makes the perfect setting for this five-day series of popular outdoor classical
concerts. Previous events have included the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
London performing the complete James Bond title themes and The
Scorpions performing with the German Film Orchestra Potsdam.
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin W berlin.mbfashionweek
.com. Early July. Big fashion show (see p.218) that coincides with the
summer outing of the more offbeat Bread & Butter Berlin (see p.218).
Gauklerfest W gauklerfest.de. Late July to early Aug. Juggling and
street performers' festival on Unter den Linden.
German-American Festival W deutsch-amerikanisches-volksfest
.de. Late July to mid-Aug. One of the most popular events of the year.
Three weeks of eating junk food and gambling your euros on lotteries and
other carnival games.
DECEMBER
Christmas Street Markets Dec. Folksy Christmas markets - with
roasted almonds, mulled wine and local handicrafts - dot the city. The
most significant are on Breitscheidplatz and Alexanderplatz, but the
prettiest are around the Staatsoper at Unter den Linden, on the
Gendarmenmarkt where evening performances add to the atmosphere,
at Schloss Charlottenburg, or outside the city in Spandau's old town.
New Year's Eve Run W scc-events.com. Dec 31. Annual 6.3km run
organized by the Berlin Marathon authorities, with free entry and prizes
for fancy dress.
AUGUST
Tanz im August W tanzimaugust.de. Mid-Aug. Around two weeks
of dance performances featuring companies and artists from all over
the world.
