WOWI
Oozing can-do attitude, Berlin's flashy and openly gay mayor Klaus Wowereit or “Wowi”, as
Berliners call him, is used to courting controversy. In June 2001 he became Germany's first
high-level politician to announce his homosexuality, coining the now famous German phrase
“Ich bin schwul, und das ist auch gut so” (“I'm gay, and that's all right, too”). But he caused quite a
stir when he zealously welcomed Folsom-Europe, a sado-masochism festival, to Berlin in 2005.
Attracting ten thousand leather- and chain-clad revellers to the city, it caused outrage among
conservatives in the city's parliament, but Wowi shot back that Berlin in particular must, above
all, be tolerant. Berliners appear to agree, and Wowi was re-elected as mayor in 2006, despite
widespread dissatisfaction with his mainstream political party the SPD, and then again in 2011,
despite all the bad press relating to delays in the construction of Berlin-Brandenburg Airport.
