MARKETS, JUNK SHOPS AND ANTIQUES
If you're looking for antiques, hunting around Berlin's flea markets can be fruitful but hard work. A good bet for junk shops
and antiques is
Suarezstrasse
in Charlottenburg: get off at U-Sophie-Charlotte-Platz and work your way along the
street. Gotzstrasse in Schöneberg and Bergmannstrasse in Kreuzberg are also good bets.
Turkish goods and some pretty rough-and-ready clutter to
sift through for gems.
Sun 8am-4pm.
Flohmarkt Schöneberg
John-F.-Kennedy-Platz 1,
Schöneberg; U-Rathaus Schöneberg; map p.113.
Some
professionals selling books and collectables, but also
amateur vendors who have cleared out the garage or attic
and are selling the motley results.
Sat & Sun 8am-4pm.
Hallentrödelmarkt
Treptow
Eichenstr. 4, Treptow;
S-Treptower Park; map pp.126-127.
Ideal rainy-day
option: there's something of everything in this huge indoor
flea market. The stalls are all permanent fixtures and
thoroughly chaotic. Head north along Hoffmannstr.,
parallel to the Spree River.
Sat & Sun 10am-5pm.
Trödelmarkt am Arkonaplatz
Arkonaplatz, Mitte,
W
troedelmarkt-arkonaplatz.de; U-Bernauer Strasse;
map pp.72-73.
Popular flea market in the city's yuppie
district, thick with 1960s and 70s junk and cult objects in
equal measure.
Sun 10am-4pm.
FLEA MARKETS
Berliner Kunstmarket
By the Bode and Pergamon
museums, Mitte;
S-Hackescher Markt; map p.53.
A
good mix of real antiques, schlocky souvenirs, used books
and bootleg CDs.
Sat & Sun 11am-5pm.
Berliner Trödelmarkt
Str. des 17 Juni, Charlottenburg;
S-Tiergarten; map p.154.
Pleasant enough for a Sun
morning stroll, but it's the most expensive of the flea
markets, and geared toward tourists. Good for embroidery
and lace, though.
Sat & Sun 10am-5pm.
Flohmarkt am Boxhagener Platz
Boxhagener Platz,
Friedrichshain; U- & S-Warschauer Strasse; map pp.126-
127.
Small flea market catering to the needs of the student
quarter. Good Eastern Bloc memorabilia.
Sun 9am-4pm.
Ì
Flohmarkt am Fehrbelliner Platz
Fehrbelliner
Platz 1, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf; U-Fehrbelliner
Platz; map p.154.
Small but very good fleamarket for
reasonably priced antiques and collectables with a local
flavour. There's a pleasant café too, but the large number of
Thai families selling fantastic street food in the adjacent
park are a bigger attraction.
Sat & Sun 10am-4pm.
Flohmarkt am Mauerpark
Bernauer Str. 63-64,
Prenzlauer Berg; U-Bernauer Strasse; map p.132.
Huge
fleamarket on the edge of Prenzlauer Berg with a bit of
everything that's cheap, including a legion of freshly stolen
and spray-painted bikes. Few real antiques, but a good
place to make a day of it, with good ethnic food stalls and a
fun open-air karaoke at 3pm.
Sun 8am-6pm.
Flohmarkt am Moritzplatz
Moritzplatz, Kreuzberg;
U-Moritzplatz; map pp.126-127.
An integral part of
Kreuzberg's social fabric, with all that entails. Lots of
