CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES
Although they like to think of themselves as such, Berliners aren't exactly trendsetters, and despite the many innovative
designers in the city their work is mostly small-scale and tends to lack international impact. Still, it's possible to pick up
bargains at the many secondhand clothes stores: you'll find unusual (and stylish) pieces here - including many odd
items from the East - at low prices. The main shopping areas at Wilmersdorferstrasse U-Bahn, and Walter-Schreiber-
Platz U-Bahn, Steglitz, have plenty of inexpensive own-brand styles. Ku'damm and Friedrichstrasse boast designer clothes
shops targeting the rich and conservative, as well as several leather outlets with cheap but good-quality jackets, and some
excellent shoe shops. For the most cutting-edge boutiques head to the Hackescher Markt area, where urban styles
dominate: think funky trainers, not glamorous heels. Many specialize in a sort of 1970s-revival-meets-GDR- Ostalgie look.
