8MM Schönhauser Allee 177 T 030 40 50 06 24,
W 8mmbar.com; U-Senefelderplatz; map p.132. This
small, blacked-out room with a little bar, a DJ spinning
anything from rock to northern soul and 8mm films
projected onto one wall is a superb place for low-key, late-
night hedonism. Daily 9pm-close.

U-Eberswalder Strasse; map p.132. Classic neighbourhood
bar - with table football and even a Kegelbahn (German
nine-pin bowling; call ahead to book; €14/hr) - that's been
taken over by a trendy set who dance in the small back room

Becketts Kopf Pappelallee 64 T 016 22 37 94 18,
W becketts-kopf.de; U- & S-Schönhauser Allee; map
p.132. It would be easy to walk straight past this
clandestine cocktail bar - but you'd be missing out. Look
out for the glowering head of Mr Beckett staring at you
from the darkness, and enter to find a sophisticated and
intimate space with one of the best cocktail lists in town.
Tues-Sun 8pm-4am.
Dr Pong Eberswalder Str. 21 W drpong.net;
U-Eberswalder Strasse; map p.132. The action here
revolves - literally - around the ping-pong table in the
middle of the main room. Rent a bat (or bring your own) and
join the crowd as they move slowly around the table, bats in
one hand, beer bottles in the other, playing a communal
game. DJs grace the sound system from time to time,
though be warned the bar is on the tourist beer crawl route
and can get packed. Mon-Sat 8pm-late, Sun 2pm-late.
Duncker Dunckerstr. 64 T 030 445 95 09,
W dunckerclub.de; S-Prenzlauer Allee; map p.132.
Indie, industrial and unashamedly Goth refuge from the
mainstream and techno. Aptly enough it's located in a
striking neo-Gothic church. Entry €3-5. Mon 9pm-late,
Tues, Thurs & Sun 10pm-late, Fri & Sat 11pm-late.
Hausbar Rykestr. 54 T 030 44 04 76 06;
U-Senefelderplatz; map p.132. It might be small, but this
unpretentious, dimly lit bar, across from the Wasserturm
and a couple of doors down from the synagogue, is a great
deal of fun on the right nights - and a late-night drinking
spot. Daily 7pm-5am.
Kulturbrauerei Knaackstr. 97 T 030 48 49 44,
W kulturbrauerei-berlin.de; U-Eberswalder Strasse; map
p.132. Nineteenth-century brewery that's been turned into a
multi-venue arts and cultural centre attracting local and
emerging bands. Its two clubs, Alte Kantine and Soda , both
attract a 30-plus crowd; the former is pretty mainstream and
rock-oriented, the latter best known for salsa nights, but also
house and r'n'b. Entry €3-8. Daily 10pm-late.

combination of rustic bar downstairs and retro bar upstairs
has made this a local classic. Free wi-fi. Mon-Fri noon-

Habermeyer Gärtnerstr. 6 T 030 29 77 18 87,
W habermeyer-bar.de; U-Samariterstrasse; map
pp.126-127. This smoky, dark, low-key, dive-style hangout
is a Friedrichshain classic. Slightly off the main path, it offers
table football and pinball machines, a miscellany of seating
and DJs playing anything from Northern soul to electronica.
Best late on weekends. Daily 7pm until late.
Kantine am Berghain Rüdersdorfer Str. 70 T 030 29
36 02 10; S-Ostbahnhof; map pp.126-127. Its friendly
atmosphere and tiny, jolly summer beer garden mean that
this venue is now far more than simply a haven for people
rejected by the neighbouring
club - to which its
music compares. Entry €5-10. Sat noon until late, Sun
9am until late.
Kptn. A. Müller Simon-Dach-Str. 32; U- & S-Warschauer
Strasse; map pp.126-127. Ramshackle, sociable and very
popular budget bar on the Simon-Dach-Str. strip, with free

the locals. Daily 6pm until late.
Rosi's Revalerstr. 29 W rosis-berlin.de; S-Warschauer
Strasse; map pp.126-127. Oddball upbeat club that
sports Berlin's classic unfinished and improvised feel in a
mix of semi-derelict buildings. There's a definite sense of
crashing a house party here, with even a small kitchen and
living room to hang out in between bouts on the
dancefloors - where indie or techno pounds. Outside table
tennis is also a big attraction. Thurs-Sat 11pm-late.
