In-Depth Information
Gretchen Obentrautstr. 19-21 T 030 25 92 27 02,
W gretchen-club.de; U-Mehringdamm; map p.118. A
bit off the beaten track, but few clubs can boast that they
occupy the 1854 stables of Queen Victoria's Prussian 1st
guards. This mid-sized club has a pedigree too, as it rose
from the ashes of the legendary
Das Hotel Mariannenstr. 26a T 030 84 11 84 33;
U-Kottbusser Tor; map pp.126-127. Split-level spot
where crowds gather to drink, chat and watch the odd TV
documentary. Divided into three areas, it features a main
bar, occasional DJs playing Latin and 1960s music and a
rustic bar with a more relaxed vibe with wooden tables and
candlelight. Daily 2pm until whenever.
Kit-Kat Club Köpenicker Str. 76 (entrance on
Brückenstr.) T 030 787 18 96, W kitkatclub.de;
U-Heinrich-Heine-Strasse; map pp.126-127. Famously
debauched club, sharing premises with the Sage Club (see
below), for people looking for casual and public liaisons -
voyeurs are not welcome. The door policy is strict: wear
something revealing or fetishistic - check the website for
guidelines, and for details of theme evenings. Fri & Sat
11pm until late, Sun 8am until late.
Konrad Tönz Falckensteinstr. 30 T 030 612 32 52,
W konradtoenzbar.de; U-Schlesisches Tor; map
pp.126-127. Cheesy bar with 1970s trappings; sip
cocktails (€4-8) while grooving to retro sounds and easy
listening. Tues-Sun 8.15pm until late.
Lido Cuvrystr. 7 T 030 69 56 68 40, W lido-berlin.de;
U-Schlesisches Tor; map pp.126-127. Old-school club
in a former theatre that's been championing new indie
music - with the occasional techno or house event - for
more than a decade. Attracts a younger crowd. Entry
€5-€9. Fri & Sat 10pm-late.
Luzia Oranienstr. 34 T 030 61 10 74 69; U-Kottbusser
Tor; map pp.126-127. Oranienstrasse's key hipster
hangout, Luzia is styled in the manner of an industrial loft,
with exposed brickwork, velvet armchairs, wall paintings by
street artists, rough wallpaper and a bizarre upstairs space
that you have to climb a ladder to get to. Decent drinks and
cocktails mean it's buzzing most nights. Daily 10am-3am.
Madame Claude Lübbener Str. 19 T 030 84 11 08 61,
W madameclaude.de; U-Görlitzer Bahnhof; map
pp.126-127. This student hangout has shows five days a
week, ranging from indie-rock and experimental to folk. Be
prepared to feel slightly unsettled by the decor, much of
which hangs upside down from the ceiling. Pay what you
want to enter. Daily 7pm-late.
Madonna Wiener Str. 22 T 030 611 69 43; U-Görlitzer
Bahnhof; map pp.126-127. Longstanding, grimy and
perennially “in” bar; check out the ceiling fresco of the
seven deadly sins, pick from the extensive whisky selection
and vibrate to the loud music. Daily 3pm until late.
Magnet Falckensteinstr. 48 W magnet-club.de;
U-Schlesisches Tor; map pp.126-127. Formerly a
Prenzlauer Berg rock'n'roll mainstay, Magnet moved to
more suitably grungy Kreuzberg in 2010. It hosts regular DJ
parties and live shows, ranging from pop to rock and from
metal to electro. Mon-Sat 10pm-late.
Möbel-Olfe Reichenberger Str. 177 T 030 23 27 46 90;
U-Kottbusser Tor; map pp.126-127. Sandwiched
club, a late-1990s
club-scene pioneer. Drum'n'bass is big here, but all species
of innovative electronic music thrive. Entry €5-12. Hours
vary, usually Thurs-Sat 11.30pm-late.
Junction Bar Gneisenaustr. 18 T 030 694 66 02,
W junction-bar.de; U-Gneisenaustrasse; map p.118.
Nightly live music covering the full spectrum of sounds,
played to a very mixed crowd in a basement club. Always
busy, and DJs keep the night going after the bands finish.
Entry €3-6. Sun-Thurs 9pm-4am, Fri & Sat 10pm-4am.
Ì Solar Stresemannstr. 76 T 0163 765 27 00,
W solarberlin.com; S-Anhalter Bahnhof; map p.118.
Swanky lounge bar whose seventeenth-floor location
provides exceptional views over the city. There's also a
pricey restaurant, but the place to be is among the
beautiful people grooving to ambient techno in the bar
above. The entrance is slightly hidden at the back of a small
parking lot opposite Anhalter Bahnhof and the door policy
can be stringent and unpredictable: there's no need to
dress up, but don't dress down either. Mon-Thurs noon-
2am, Fri noon-4am, Sat 6pm-4am, Sun 6pm-2am.
Zyankali Bar Grossbeerenstr. 64 T 030 251 63 33,
W zyankali.de; U-Mehringdamm; map p.118. Pharmacy-
themed bar that's brimming with its own weird science -
odd even by Berlin standards. Glass-topped co ns with fake
skeletons serve as tables; drinks (more than 200 cocktails)
contain some unusual ingredients, sometimes home-made
and served in laboratory ware. Movie-themed nights take
place in the back room. Daily 8pm-late.

and a fantastically upbeat place. Entry €1-5. Food daily
6pm-1am. May-Sept Mon-Fri 2pm-late, Sat & Sun
noon-late.
