from Rosenthaler Platz. Filled with comfy flea-market
furnishings, it's a great spot for reading or chatting during the
day, and for a more upbeat drink late at night when DJs play
anything from disco to Latin. Daily 24hr.
Oscar Wilde Irish Pub Friedrichstr. 112a T 030 282 81

map pp.72-73. Perennially popular and sociable Irish bar
with all the usual ingredients: Guinness, Kilkenny and
Strongbow on draught (German beers too), various
whiskies, Irish breakfasts and SkySports on the big screen.
All this makes it a hub for Berlin's English-speaking expats,
with quiz nights (Mon), karaoke (every other Fri), and live
music on most weekend nights. Mon-Thurs noon-2am,

Deco cocktail lounge with a 20- and 30-something clientele
lounging on the leather and velvet seating. Plays jazz, trip-

theatre, with lurid red decor and chintzy furniture giving it
the feel of a 1950s brothel. Readings, concerts and club
nights are held here. Wed is soul and funk night, other
nights offer a mix of electronica, ska and Britpop. Entry
€6-7. Mon & Wed-Sat 11pm-4am.
Schokoladen Ackerstr. 169 T 030 282 65 27,

pp.72-73. The spartan, bare-brick interior of this former
chocolate factory is a hangover from its time as a squatted
building in the early post-Wende days. Now a venue for
theatrical and art events, live indie-pop and up-and-
coming singer/songwriters. Mon-Thurs 8pm-4am, Fri &
Sat 9pm-4am, Sun 7pm-4am.
Sophienclub Sophienstr. 6 W sophienclub-berlin.de;
S-Hackescher Markt; map pp.72-73. Small, functional
and rather nondescript club with a couple of cramped,
well-populated dance floors and a mixed crowd. At its best
on Tues Britpop nights; at other times patrons survive on a
medley of soul, funk, house and indie. Entry €3-6. Tues &
Thurs-Sat 10pm until late.
Verkehrsberuhigte Ost-Zone Monbijouplatz,

S-Hackescher Markt; map pp.72-73. Great little bar if you
are looking for a dose of Ostalgie (see p.66) with your beer -
there's an abundance of GDR memorabilia. It's hidden away
in the arches of the S-Bahn overlooking the Spree, which
might be what keeps it from being touristy. Daily 8pm-3am.

club-style wine shop and bar operates on an honesty-box
system after 8pm: pay what you feel is fair for your drinks
when you leave. This makes it popular with a mix of leftie
sympathizers, students and freeloaders. The wine is
decidedly average but the atmosphere friendly. The owners
run similar ventures nearby - Perlin (Griebenowstr. 5) and
Fra Rosa

saloon meets Chinese restaurant theme, this perennially
popular den of kitsch acts as restaurant, bar and club/live
venue. The food - mostly burgers and nachos - is decent
enough and matches the informal nature of the crowd,
who come to check out the regular DJs and bands who play
mostly country, punk and 50s and 60s-era tunes. Entry
€1-8. Mon-Fri noon-late, Sat & Sun 6pm-late.

OUTDOOR VENUES
International big-name acts visiting town regularly play at one of several stadiums and larger
venues around town and generally the act rather than the venue will be the big draw. The
exceptions to this are those performing in the Olympic Stadium (see p.158) and at the two
other suburban venues below.

outdoor venue, tucked away in the forest near
Köpenick, and a favourite for summertime festivals.

this open-air natural amphitheatre regularly attracts
big-name acts in the summer and is great fun on a warm
