LATE NIGHT DRINKING AT HACKESCHER MARKT
Nightlife
Since the days of the Weimar Republic, and even through the lean postwar
years, Berlin's nightlife has had the reputation for being some of the best -
and steamiest - in Europe, an image fuelled by the savage caricatures of
George Grosz and films like Cabaret. Today the main focus is on the clubs
that have grown out of the city's techno scene - in a remarkably short space
of time these places, many in abandoned East German industrial buildings,
have spawned one of the most exciting scenes in Europe. The city also has a
wide range of more traditional clubs, ranging from slick hangouts to raucous
punky dives. Lively, varied and inexpensive, the live music scene is bolstered
by the city's unpretentious grittiness - in addition to the music venues, all
but the most committed techno clubs will often have live performances too.
