Vegetarian wholefood at its best, with a daily changing
international menu - dishes might include lentils with
goat's cheese - and a fabulous lunch bar where food is
priced by weight (€1.50/100g). Often standing-room only,
but the atmosphere remains friendly and relaxed.
Mon-Fri
10am-5pm.

A relaxed, tiny Taiwanese noodle shop run by friendly
grandmas who make excellent dumplings and noodle
soups (small and large portions available). Try the “Chinese
Maultaschen” - fried ravioli-style pasta packets filled with
pork and vegetables (€5-6) - and ask for the home-made
noodles (not on the menu).
Daily noon-midnight.
Piccola Taormina

piccola-taormina.net; U-Uhlandstrasse; map p.108.
Enduringly popular wafer-thin pizza specialist with a
strange set-up: order and pay at the bar, find a seat in the
back room, listen out for a tannoy announcement; then
head back to the bar to collect. It's all a bit chaotic and very
Italian, but well worth it for the food - slices from €1.50.
Daily 11am-2am.

The slightly ragged charm of the “Black Café” makes
it feel like it would be better placed in the east. Downstairs
is small and intimate, but upstairs the large, airy room has
a relaxed, convivial vibe. Food is served 24hr, including
breakfasts (from €4.50) - but it comes into its own as a
night-owl place.
Daily 24hr.

Corner bar and 1970s throwback for would-be arty and
intellectual types. Jazz, earnest debate and good cheap
grub (€5-11), including goulash and Swabian
Maultaschen
(ravioli), served until 1am.
Daily noon-6am.

Ashok Sharma opened
this restaurant in 1975 as he was missing the food
from his home in Punjab. It offers well-priced, decent
food (curries around €8.50) in a small
Currywurst
and crispy fries. Eat here, then cross the street for an
exquisite chocolate or two from KaDeWe (see p.230).

A small, classic spot that's
been serving great breakfasts and coffee for more than a
decade. Lunches start at €5.50 (soups) with a hearty
Burgundy stew for €13.50. Service is good and it's also nice

Longstanding Berlin bistro, with French colonial
touches in the decor and on the menu; the €10 three-
course business lunches are a bargain, otherwise you'll pay
€17-23 for oft-changing mains that are always fresh and
reliable - the oysters are particularly good.
