SCHLOSS SANSSOUCI
Out of the city
When Berlin's city fringes don't seem like breather enough from its bustle, a
day-trip into its sleepy Brandenburg hinterland might be just the thing. This
federal state is replete with gentle scenery, a patchwork of beech forests,
heaths and fields of dazzling rapeseed and sunflowers, all sewn together
by a multitude of rivers, lakes and waterways. Thanks to Berlin's superb
transport network, the key towns of Potsdam and Oranienburg are easy and
economical day-trips. And since the S-Bahn network allows you to transport
a bike, you should seriously consider bringing one along, or renting one.
Potsdam's parks are particularly ideal for a day's gentle exploration on two
wheels coupled with a picnic. But should you wish to explore the state more
widely by car, you're sure to find cruising the flat tree-lined avenues that
typify Brandenburg's minor roads a pleasure.
