Just west of and over the road from U-Bahn Dahlem-Dorf, the working farm and
handicrafts centre
Domäne Dahlem
attempts to show the skills and crafts of the
pre-industrial age. he old estate house has a few odds and ends, most intriguing of
which are the thirteenth-century swastikas, but the collection of agricultural instruments
in an outbuilding is better, with some good early twentieth-century inducements to
farmers from grain manufacturers. Elsewhere are demonstrations of woodcarving,
wool- and cotton-spinning and various other farm crafts, and at weekends some of the
old agricultural machinery is fired up and the animals are paraded.

The Grunewald
he
Grunewald
makes up around 32 square kilometres of mixed woodland and though
more than two-thirds were cut down in the postwar years for badly needed fuel,
subsequent replanting has replaced pine and birch with oak and made it more
attractive and popular with Berliners for its clean air and walks.
he eastern edge of the Grunewald, where the wealthy suburb of Zehlendorf
begins, is dotted with a series of modest but unusual
museums
