WANNSEE BEACH
The western suburbs
Berlin's smart, sleepy and wealthy western suburbs encompass a disparate
group of attractions of cultural and historical interest, as well as the woodlands
and lakes beyond them where hikes through dense forests and swims from
sandy beaches feel a world away - not just a half-dozen S-Bahn stops - from
the city centre. The closest of the main attractions to the centre is Schloss
Charlottenburg - Berlin's pocket Versailles - where opulent chambers,
attractive gardens and excellent art museums can easily fill a day. Elsewhere,
given the easy transport links, it's possible to have a good day out visiting a
Dahlem museum, going for a short hike in the Grunewald, and rounding
things off with a visit to Spandau's Renaissance Zitadelle. Alternatively, you
could take a private boat trip on the Havel (see p.25).
