he army later returned, but its success was shortlived as the putsch foundered -
thanks mainly to a highly effective general strike. his militancy continued into the
Nazi era: on January 30, 1933, the day Hitler came to power, a red flag flew from the
chimney of the brewery in the suburb of Friedrichshagen. his defiance was punished
during the Köpenicker Blutwoche (“Köpenick Week of Blood”) in June that year, during
which the SA swooped on Social Democrats and communists. Five hundred people
were imprisoned and 91 murdered.

To walk to Köpenick's old town from the S-Bahn station, follow Borgamannstrasse
to Mandrellaplatz, location of Köpenick's Amtsgericht (district court), where victims
of the Köpenicker Blutwoche were executed. From Mandrellaplatz, Puchanstrasse
leads to Am Generalshof and Platz des 23 April , which commemorates the arrival in
Köpenick of the Soviet army - liberators or conquerors, depending on your point of
view. On the platz a sculpted clenched fist atop a stone tablet honours those killed
by the Nazis in 1933.
From Mandrellaplatz, the Dammbrücke (boats can be rented at the foot of the
bridge for €7/hr) leads across the Spree into Köpenick's Altstadt (old town). Situated
on an island between the Spree and Dahme rivers, the Altstadt's streets run more or
