KULTURBRAUEREI
Prenzlauer Berg and around
Northeast of Mitte, the former East Berlin borough of Prenzlauer Berg was
originally a densely populated working-class district. It was fought over
street-by-street during the war, which meant that many of its hallmark
turn-of-the-twentieth-century tenement blocks survived, along with its leafy
cobbled streets. In the GDR days, this was a uniquely vibrant and exciting
corner of East Berlin, home to artists and young people seeking an alternative
lifestyle, choosing to live on the edge of established East German society
(quite literally - the district's western boundary was marked by the Wall). After
the Wende , the venerable atmosphere, central location and low rents quickly
made this a lively and fashionable district. This ambience has faded a little as
the first wave of migrants has aged: today health-food stores proliferate, as do
young children, equipped with fair-trade garments and wooden toys.
