CHECKPOINT CHARLIE
Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain and around
Southwest of Mitte lies the mainly residential borough of Kreuzberg-
Friedrichshain. The district divides into three: middle-class western
Kreuzberg; unkempt eastern Kreuzberg with its large Turkish-German
community and its many drop-outs and would-be bohemians; and
Friedrichshain, an old East Berlin neighbourhood that lies somewhere
between the two, with hip warehouse clubs rubbing shoulders with tidy
residential streets. Just south of Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain lie several
adjacent districts - particularly Tempelhof, Treptow and Neukölln - which
hold the odd attraction. Neukölln in particular is slowly establishing itself
to be as hip as eastern Kreuzberg. By day the borough has its share of
sights - all in easy reach of one another on foot or via the rapid U1
underground line - but it's at night that it really comes into its own.
