Monday 11 th July was our last full day in Syria. I had managed to eat a little the previous
night and had really made a great recovery from my 24-hour fever. I had a light breakfast of
pita bread, apricot jam, and some sweet tea.
We were to spend the whole of our last day in Damascus and it was to prove one of the most
interesting and impressive days of a fascinating trip to Syria.
As a few years have passed since the trip and my diaries were not very full for our last day
due to my weakened state after the fever, I can only remember the stand-out moments, which
included Jane Digby's grave, the Umayyad Mosque, Saladin's grave, the old town and the
souqs.
Peter had wanted to visit lots of places connected to his work and passions such as the zoo,
horse and falcon markets and a Bedouin animal market but I have no recollection about
whether we found some or any of the above and I have no photographic evidence to jolt my
hazy memories of the day.
