Impromptu concert at Gypsy camp
As the light was fading, we continued on our journey to our final destination of the day of
Tartus.
I cannot remember if I accepted any hospitality in the form of food or drinks from the
gypsies. On the road back, however, I do remember being tempted by some delicious fresh
cherries, which I bought at the roadside. They may have been the cause of my sufferings
later on.
So, we carried on our journey to the port city of Tartus on the Mediterranean Sea, which
was also one of Syria's main seaside resorts. It was also used by the Russian navy for “re-
pair and replenishment” of its Black Sea fleet and is Russia's only base on the Mediter-
ranean. Russia was also dredging the port to allow larger ships to dock there. This may help
to explain a few of the political realities of the present situation in the country.
