Beehive Houses
Further, on our way south, we came across some small villages, which we decided to ex-
plore. We were invited to a house, where we were offered bread, yoghurt, and sweet tea. In
the village, there were several houses of “Hajis” who had been on the Haj to Mecca and on
whose walls and gates, was artwork of a naïve kind that depicted the stages of the journey
from the village to Mecca and back. The paintings depicted the holy Kaaba, Arabic inscrip-
tions, the airplane that took the pilgrims to Mecca and symbolic flowers. It was humbling
to think that this trip may have cost them their life's savings.
