Hittite Lion Statue
We carried on north of Aleppo, moving closer to the Turkish border and to the Syrian lands
that were ceded by France to the Turks in 1939 (before Syrian independence in 1946). Our
super guide shared his knowledge of agronomy with us and reeled off facts about how
the soil got its red colour from the iron and calcium as a process of oxidation. He pointed
out olives groves, pistachios, pines, figs, imported eucalyptus, cotton plants, pomegranate
trees, vines, okra, flowers and peaches and mercilessly tested us on our powers of memory
and observation.
