We got up early for breakfast, as we wanted to visit a market and pick up Peter's wayward
friend before going to the airport. We made a brief stop at a fruit market, where much hag-
gling was done by this friend over miniscule sums, probably more for sport than economy,
and we arrived at the airport in good time. The Air Arabia flight was fine and we were
soon back in Dubai, where I underwent ritual quarantine and decontamination followed by
a warm welcome home.
Post Script:
At some point in our last few days in Damascus, we actually met the mysterious, elusive
but, nevertheless, ever-present Rafa. She had been a bit like Charlie in “Charlie's Angels”
but when we met, she did not disappoint. She was larger than life with an overflowing per-
sonality and a great sense of humour. She had looked after us remotely from the minute we
arrived until the last minute of our stay and we expressed our sincere gratitude to her. In sub-
sequent years, we kept in touch and I directed several people to her company and had great
reports back from them all of their equally generous and meticulous treatment.
