spot, where three ten days earlier, a firefight between government forces and unidentified
insurgents had taken place. Our trip had come full circle. We had not met with any troubles
on our trip. We had enjoyed some of the best of Syria and had nothing but praise and ad-
miration for its wonderful culture and friendly people.
The call to prayer rose from numerous mosques below. We sipped the drinks of our choice
and bade a fond farewell to Syria.
It was a great end to our eventful trip and to date, neither of us has returned. Both of us have
many friends from Syria and are aware of some of the hardships they are going through.
Many have left the country forever and are in exile. Many are afraid to return for fear of
conscription or the violence. The huge task of reconstructing the country will take decades
to achieve and will consume sparse resources and I hope it will go to the right people once
all the troubles have abated and not to opportunists.
For now, I prefer to remember those few, happy days of summer at a time of less uncertain-
ties and when peace prevailed.
