DARLING HARBOUR
Harbour continued as, first, a grimy
workplace and, later, with the
industrial decline of Sydney
Harbour, an obsolete and run-
down backwater. In the 1980s,
it was decided to make this
prime city site a focal point
of the 1988 Bicentenary. The
project was the largest urban
redevelopment ever carried
out in Australia. Today Darling Harbour
is an extension of the city centre with
a mixture of fine museums, shopping
and open space. It has become a
popular and lively area of Sydney.
Named in honour of the
seventh governor of New
South Wales, Ralph Darling,
this area was originally called
Cockle Bay because of the mol-
luscs early European settlers
collected here. Darling Harbour
was an unsavoury place in the late
19th century, known for its
thieves' dens and bawdy
houses. Its docks, backed by a railway
yard, were an embarkation point for
wool and other exports. The country's
industrial age began here in 1815 with
the opening of a steam mill. Darling
