on patrol and swim within the
“flagged” areas. In their red
and yellow caps, surf lifesavers
keep an eye out for changing
surf conditions, people in
difficulty and surfers coming
too close to areas set aside
for swimmers only.
Lifeguards from
district councils
are dressed in blue
(see p54) . Look out for signs
on the beach indicating that
it is dangerous to swim, and
do not go in under any cir-
cumstances. Popular beaches
have loudspeakers to warn
people of sudden hazards. If
you plan to bushwalk, do
not hike alone. Always
tell someone where
you are going and when you
will be back. It is wise to take
a map and a basic first-aid kit,
as well as food and fresh water,
and warm, waterproof clothing.
When walking through the
bush, be aware that you are
passing through the habitat of
native animals, including some
poisonous snakes and spiders.
It is very unlikely that you will
encounter any, but you should
wear substantial footwear, keep
a close eye on where you step
and check around logs and
rocks before sitting on them.
Snake bite victims should be
kept calm and, most important,
remain still while emergency
medical help is sought. Try to
identify the snake by size and
colour so that the correct anti-
venom can be administered.
The funnel-web (see p89)
and the redback spider are
both poisonous species found
in the Sydney region. Anyone
bitten by either of these should
seek urgent medical attention.
Pharmacies are generally
known as “chemist shops” in
Sydney and are liberally
scattered throughout the city
and suburbs. They sell a wide
range of unrestricted drugs
and other medical supplies
over the counter. Pharmacists
can be a source of advice on
simple ailments such as colds
and stomach upsets. You can
ring After-Hours Pharmacy
information if you need to
find one that is open outside
normal business hours.
Doctor's prescriptions from
your own country cannot
be filled by an Australian
pharmacist unless they
are first endorsed by a medical
practitioner practising locally.
