Creating snapshots
The steps that create snapshots are common for any guest and are independent of the oper-
ating system running inside.
To create a snapshot, use the following steps:
1. Navigate to the Virtual Machines tab, and select a virtual machine to take a snap-
shot. Right-click on it and select Create Snapshot . Give a meaningful name to the
snapshot so that it will be easy to restore the proper snapshot in the future, leave
the Save Memory option checked, and click on OK .
2. During the course of the snapshot creation, the virtual machine status changes from
the up to the pause state and comes back to the up state post completion of the
snapshot action.
3. To view the newly created snapshot, select the virtual machine and select snapshots
from the bottom pane. This will give you a list of all the meaningful snapshots cre-
ated for the virtual machine. Select the snapshot and explore the General , Disks ,
Network Interfaces , and Installed Application options on the right-hand side of
the same window to view the details about the snapshot.
Restoring virtual machines from the snapshot
To restore virtual machines from the snapshot, select the virtual machine and click on
Snapshots in the bottom pane, and perform the following steps. Before this, you need to
power off the virtual machine in order to merge the snapshot:
1. Select the snapshot you intend to restore, and click on Preview to preview the
snapshot. The status of the virtual machine briefly changes to Image Locked be-
fore returning to Down .
2. Now, start the virtual machine, which will start from the state of the disk image of
the snapshot. The preview will give you the flexibility to cross-check the virtual
machine state. If you feel that this is the state to which you want to restore your
virtual machine, you can now shut down the virtual machine and go to the Snap-
shots tab in the bottom pane.
3. Click on Commit to restore the virtual machine to this state; this will erase all the
subsequent snapshots taken after that.
4. If you want to undo and roll back to the last state, you can click on Undo . By
clicking on Commit or Undo , the virtual machine will go to the Image Locked
