In-Depth Information
To clone a RHEL virtual machine from a template, have a look at the following steps:
1. Navigate to the
Virtual Machines
tab and click on
New Server
.
2. Under the
General
tab of the virtual machine creation windows, select the newly
created template from the drop-down menu under
Based on Template
.
3. Enter a name with an appropriate description for your new virtual machine. The
rest of the values will be inherited from the template, and optionally, you can also
change them.
4. You can also change the storage allocation policy of your new virtual machine by
clicking on
Show Advanced Options
. Move to the
Resource Allocation
tab and
you will see that the
Storage Allocation
field will get enabled to choose the type
of provisioning and storage allocation policy. If you set
Provisioning
as
Thin
, the
virtual machine will depend upon the template it's created from, and it won't al-
low you to remove the template unless and until all the virtual machines created
from the template are removed from the cluster.
A clone does not depend on the template it was created from after it has been cre-
ated. So, it's recommended that you choose
Clone
as the option for more flexibil-
ity,
Storage Allocation Policy
to
Preallocated
for the server and high I/O intens-
ive workloads, and
Provisioning
as
Thin
for desktop workloads.
5. Retain all other default settings and click on
OK
to create the virtual machine.
Cloning a virtual machine might take some time, and during this time the new vir-
tual machine will have an
Image Locked
status before moving to the
Down
state.
Finally, the virtual machine gets displayed in the virtual machines' list, and you
can power on to set up the basic network setting to host your application.
