Resource Allocation settings
The
Resource Allocation
tab allows you to define the following compute resource set-
tings for a virtual machine:
•
CPU Shares
: Under the
CPU Allocation
section, you can enable
CPU Shares
and define the CPU share value to a predefined or custom level. This option al-
lows users to specify the priority of CPU utilization among virtual machines with
shared CPU resources. A virtual machine marked with a
High
priority will re-
ceive twice the amount of CPU resources allocated to the
Medium
priority ma-
chines and four times the amount allocated to a
Low
priority machine.
•
CPU Pinning topology
: This enables the virtual machine's virtual CPU to run on
a specific
physical CPU
(
pCPU
) in a specific host. This option is enabled only if
you choose
Do not allow migration
under the
Host
setting of the virtual machine
creation.
•
Physical Memory Guaranteed
: This is the amount of physical memory guaran-
teed for the virtual machine, and you can customize it as per your requirements.
•
Memory Balloon Device Enabled
: This checkbox enables memory overcommit
on virtual machines. When this option is set, the
Memory Overcommit Man-
ager
(
MoM
) will start ballooning where and when possible with a limitation on
the guaranteed memory size of every virtual machine.
•
Storage Allocation
: This is available only when a template is selected. We will
see this in detail when creating the virtual machine from the templates later in the
chapter.
VirtIO-SCSI Enabled
: This will allow you to attach the VirtIO SCSI controller
when running the virtual machine. The available options for the
Resource Alloc-
ation
section are shown in the following screenshot:
