Phoon et al. (1995) and Wang et al. (2011a) used a drilled shaft design example shown
in Figure 7.5 to illustrate the multiple resistance factor design (MRFD) approach and the
expanded RBD approach with Direct MCS. This design example is redesigned in this sec-
tion to illustrate the integration of the expanded RBD approach with Subset Simulation
