The prior mean of u x ( X ) is 50.2 mm, which indicates that the prior model underestimates
the measured tip displacement. Figures 5.15 and 5.16 show the posterior mean of Young's
modulus E and friction angle φ , respectively. The posterior means of the elements in the
vicinity of the trench are smaller than the prior mean, which reflects the effect of the mea-
sured displacement. The effect is local, since the values of the stiffness and strength of the
soil farther away from the trench have limited influence on the deformation at the location
