In-Depth Information
An additional benefit lies in the fact that the process of calculating probability of failure
reveals which sources of uncertainty are most important, and which are unimportant. This
understanding provides an effective guide to what improvements in knowledge will reduce
overall uncertainty the most.
Although never highly precise, probabilities of failure provide a valuable supplement to
other measures of safety, like factor of safety or margin of safety. For this reason, calculat-
ing probability of failure adds value to geotechnical engineering analyses.
